Chinese Carved and Ebonised Centre Table
circa 1820

£3,850

A rare early 19th Century Chinese carved and ebonised centre Table with gilt decoration and an open Chinese fret frieze with a historically restored top, the work probably undertaken in the mid 20th Century.

The Table was originally one of a near pair, at Knole House in Kent. Knole being the home of the Sackvill-West family. At some point the pair were split up, the other example is still in the Knole House collection today, displaying a slightly different hand painted finish and a tray top.

This example was discovered in a barn at Long Crichel Rectory, Dorset.

The house was bought in 1945 by Eddy Sackville-West, Desmond Shawe Taylor and Eardley Knollys. The three men established a famous literary 'salon', visited by many well known personalities in the post war period.

A very interesting example of a Chinese Export Table with a fascinating history.
