A small serpentine marble Grand Tour Sculpture of a 'Sleeping Lion'. The sculpture of this small sleeping lion was originally created by the Italian artist Antonio Canova (1757-1822). They were created in 1792 for the monumental tomb of Pope Clement XIII in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome.
Also used as a model by Karl Friedrich Schinkel in the early 19th Century for the memorial to Scharnhorst in Berlin. HEIGHT: 10cm (3.9") WIDTH: 8cm (3.1") LENGTH: 19cm (7.4")
