Pair of Important Napoleonic Painted
Open Armchairs
circa 1805

£18,500 (the pair)

An extremely rare and important pair of French painted  fauteuil or open armchairs by the renowned 18th Century Parisian furniture-maker, Jacob-Desmalter, circa 1805.

The chairs have an impeccable provenance and were commissioned for the Imperial Palace of the Tuileries specifically to furnish the boxes (or loge) of its private theatre.  With the fall of Napoleon, the Tuileries reverted to a royal palace and the chairs carry both their Imperial inventory labels and their later royal household labels, as well as both the stamp of their maker and the royal stamp depicting a crown and fleur de lis.

The chairs have been carefully dry-scraped back to their original grey/green paintwork and traditional upholstered ready for covering.

Full provenance and inventory details available for inspection on request.
